Portraiture is the central theme of Kiko Urquiola’s work, presenting various personal dilemmas, most of which are internal. The artist has always strived to bring out the hidden side of the human experience that nonetheless affects our daily lives. It’s what it’s like to do something that seems pointless. Sometimes, even when you want to do it, you hold back because you know that, no matter what the outcome, it will still be pointless.

Emotional, mental and spiritual states are as important, if not more important, than what happens to us. After all, our flight and fight responses, our ability to cope with or abandon defeat, our beliefs and ideologies are all shaped by these internal compulsive mechanisms.

An objective definition of time must emphasize the present moment. Some people believe that time exists, others do not. Time is considered to be an illusion. Sometimes we simply use time as a reason to restrict ourselves from doing what we need or want. When you think about it, maybe it will be worth it, or maybe we are just wasting our time. But so, what? We do what we want, our mind and body will be more at peace, and how is that not a way to love ourselves?

Our true selves are living emotions and thoughts that are blocked when they are not expressed and responded to, or when they are presented but often criticized and dismissed. These blocked emotions and thoughts do not disappear automatically, but are repressed, and the repressed emotions are transformed into depression or anxiety, or even into physical illnesses.

So, people who lose themselves, who are afraid to show their true selves, are the ones who are easily depressed and are part of the most unhappy crowd.

You want to find your purpose in things that don’t suit you, then you will always find yourself in the mirror of others. Why don’t we go out and be bold in our lives and love ourselves?

“Pointless” is Kiko Urquiola’s 9th Solo Exhibition.

LOCALE

As a collection of open themes to express various forms of art freely, the collaboration includes a diversity of original artwork and artistic practices. Each artist created a wall-bound work and personalized house sculpture. With that, they’ll be able to highlight what their identity is, and what trajectory they’re going to do. The tendency is that, once the size and a specific theme are provided, there is a possibility that the artist will be limited.

The primary objective is to highlight Bulacan’s young artist community and introduce the younger ones. A way to map the upcoming young artists here in Bulacan and highlight how diverse and evolving it is. The Group of seniors has merged a group to guide a Filipino Young Artist through collaboration and to grow continuous projects with Filipino Young Artists.

“Locale” is a Group Exhibition serving as a diverse collection of originals regarding modern Filipino artists. The Group artist depicted different approaches to convey original art techniques and interpretations to present in the exhibition.

This online exhibition will continue to be updated. Please come back to visit this page in its entirety soon.
