From a curtained window looking out from the inside, we observe the surroundings with an overlay on our vision. We peek through the layers of fabric to protect ourselves from being seen and from what we see.
Like curtained windows, we use cloth to adorn ourselves and show what we want to be viewed as. Plain, simple, and brocaded patterns-we go to lengths to represent ourselves to the outside. But at the same time, we use it to hide things we don’t want others to see. Somehow, it also puts an overlay on our vision. We cannot see clearly through it and we fail to understand the big picture.
Almost like still life, but not quite. In these recent paintings, Aubrey Caabay introduces the absence of the female figures and focuses almost entirely on cloth. It is draped upon trees, coiled together, and bundled-up with cord; giving it character aside from its immediate qualities. Her sixth solo show presents her constant subject matter: cloth, how it represents us and how we relate to our surroundings.
