“Numbers Trap” is a Three-Man Exhibition by John Loyd Benz De Leon, Mark Francisco, and Jerline Sunga. The title alludes to a question about the essence of entrapment in an endless cycle of voids, and how its existence affects the artists’ lives as they tackle the daily struggle of productivity and time management. It is an examination of the realities of life, highlighting day-to-day activities and how the sum of it all interrupts the art-making process.
Numbers, as abstract as they may seem, are solidified into existence. They never lie, and are unforgiving to the desperate. It is seen with how simple likes, shares, and comments from social media can take control of our actions.
1, 5, 10, 50, 100… When do we stop counting? When does infinity end?
If time were to pause, if the calculations were to halt and the algorithm stops working, would there be any difference when we are already trapped in the presence of numbers? Would there be any changes to our outputs? Or, would it be another endless pursuit for nothingness?
This show is not just a display of expression but an inquiry to what trouble artists and everyday people. Productivity and time management is reduced not only by social media but by the pressures of living in the 21st century, where everyday is a challenge to adapt to new technology while satisfying the people around us.
