ARTIST STATEMENT

As if you need to know, but I’ll say it anyway. The greatest deception we do to ourselves, out of our love of the word “positivity,” is that we pretend monsters don’t exist. Especially when our comfort was never challenged. Or we’ve hurt so much before that we don’t want to deal with it anymore. We tend to brush off reality until we fall into complacency. That’s why when monstrosity hits, we usually don’t know what to do. Often times our initial reaction is to find fault, turning our heads to someone or something to blame. Instead of taking responsibility, we love to find excuses, acting like the world owes us an explanation. We neglect to realize that we are the reason why monsters exist because we reflect them. I, myself, used to have this kind of dilemma. That’s why it took some time to convince myself to go with this exhibit theme. I was hesitant at first, because I was considering a lot of things. I was afraid that nobody could relate to it, or I will be misinterpreted of promoting violence. Yes, I was afraid of my own monster. Then I realized that art is a great platform that could start a healthy conversation. Conversations that could bring wisdom, courage, and meaning. I’m an artist, and I’m not here to conform to what this art scene dictates. After all, for a while now, I noticed the art scene became a little bit boring with all these so-called “beautiful” artworks. I think it could use a little bit of pushback. It’s nice to be liked, but I’m not here for it. I’ve learned how to fight my monsters, I may not win all the time, but slowly I’m learning how to deal with it. I cannot please everybody. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I may stir some emotions and offend some goody-two-shoes with this exhibit, which is totally out of my control. Now, at least I am free from one of my “what ifs.” Of course, I take full responsibility for my action, and I’m open to any criticism. Yes, as if you really want to know, but whether you agree or not. One thing I’ve learned for sure, and I truly believe it! “Monster comes for only those who are afraid.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rodel Jacintos is a self-taught artist. He learned about his gift very early on in his life. When he was young, he enjoyed drawing cowboys rather than playing with other kids. He’s an avid artbook reader, especially when YouTube and Google were not yet around. His Philippine Art scene education started when he managed galleries where he organized and exhibited many then-upcoming, now established artists. Now he enjoys pushing boundaries by questioning particularly “men mindset” with his artworks. With the help of his artwork character, “Bald Rudy, who was named after his late father, he continues to tell stories and open conversations, powered by his curiosity of infinite ideas.
